Exploring History through
Fashion & Textiles 1400-1900 Workshop
with Margo Singer
8 Mondays from March 7th 2011 - 7-9pm
The course is presented by Margo Singer M.Ed, author of ‘Textile Arts’ and ‘Textile Surface Decoration’
An Illustrated course which explores the following:
- Ruffs and farthingales, the male peacock of Charles 11’s reign
- Sumptuary laws to Victorian corsets
- 19th Century arts and crafts design
All sessions will include illustrations, source materials, samples and demonstrations:
- Timeline – political, religious and economic developments
- The role of textiles and dress in society
- Technological developments influencing textiles
- Men’s and women’s roles and their influence on dress and society
During this course you will be able to sample a variety of techniques including:
- Stamping & stencilling
- Quilting
- Embroidery
- Foiling & using beads and sequins
This will enable you to make some unique small craft items such as book covers, small bags, lavender bags, bookmarks & pictures inspired by the historical sources you will have seen During the sessions.
