Learn how to use a variety of flowers, plants and leaves to directly transfer colour and shapes on to fabric.

You will be given fabric to decorate using this immediate technique of applying pigment directly onto the ready prepared fabric. We shall wrap up bundles of fabric and leaves and we shall also be using hammers to transfer the pigment onto the fabric. Hopefully we shall work outside if the sun shines, but be warned it is a bit noisy. The fabric is pre-mordanted so that the plant pigments will last. We shall be using a variety of plants including onion skins, eucalyptus, geranium and oak leaves.

Costs include materials, equipment and refreshments.

We will use mordants to extend the variety of the dye colours. The aim of the natural dyeing workshop is to inspire confidence for those new to natural dyeing, and to share information with those already familiar with the process.

Shibori Tie Dye Workshop

Learn to use shibori methods of folding and dyeing with indigo to make beautiful patterns in a silk scarf.

We will prepare our silk scarves using shibori and tritik as well as other methods of tying. You will be shown how to make up a vat of indigo dye and after the dying process we will watch the fascinating patterns develop as you untie your scarf. You can enjoy looking at examples of tie dyed fabrics and books to inspire your own designs.

Natural Dyeing Summer School

We will produce an impressive range of beautiful colours from a variety of natural materials including leaves, bark, roots, berries and kitchen waste.

The aim of this workshop is to inspire confidence for those new to natural dyeing and to share information with those already familiar with the processes. We will explain what equipment is needed and how to prepare the materials for dyeing. We will show you examples of yarn which has been dyed and also look at the fascinating history of certain dye stuffs.

You will be supplied with some fabric to dye but bring along some of your own materials or yarn to dye as well. Bring rubber gloves and an apron and wear old clothes. You may like to take notes during the workshop so bring a note book and we will give you names of informative books and websites. Bring a camera to record the process and a packed lunch as we will stop for a break during each session.

Day one - Collect dye plants from the park, the old railway line and garden. We will have examples of natural dye stuffs and explain how and where to obtain dyestuffs for free. Prepare fabrics for dyeing by mordanting, wet out fabrics and yarn and prepare dye baths. Feel free to bring along any plant materials that you would like to use to experiment with and to find out and see if it will dye fabric.
Day two - Prepare the dye baths for dyeing and then dye yarn and fabrics a range of beautiful colours.
Day three - Dye techniques, including, over dye, dip dye, tie dye and experiment with different dye methods.

Cost £130 for three sessions, including materials, equipment and refreshments.
